A Pot of BEANS
Birth Education and Natality Support

This project will create 24 neighborhood-based support groups for women of childbearing age in neighborhoods throughout Sarasota County. Neighborhoods will be selected based on three criteria:

Recent data concerning birth outcomes
Identification of a volunteer community health worker to facilitate the group (Healthy Start Coalition will train, provide resources to, publicly recognize, and pay an incentive stipend of $1,000 per year to the facilitator)
Confirmation by neighborhood residents that they would welcome and participate in such a group

Groups will provide

Weekly meetings at a time convenient to participants
Content based on topic selection by participants from a menu of topics on perinatal and parenting education
Peer support model - "tend and befriend"
Child care
Refreshments

Groups will be unique in linking improved birth outcomes to improved neighborhood quality of life measures.

Improved Birth Outcomes	Improved Neighborhood Quality of Life - 20% Improvement/Yr.
Premature delivery moves from 10% to 8% in 1 year	Fewer confirmed reports of child abuse and neglect
Low birth weight moves from 8.25% to 6.75% in 1 year	Decreased street crime and domestic Violence
Racial disparities in fetal and infant death rates diminish by 10%/year	Increased stability of domicile for group participants
	Increased voter turnout
