Did You Know?
African-American babies are twice as likely to die in their first year of life as other babies, and pregnant African-American women lose their babies before birth at a rate three to four times higher than other women.
There are different reasons why these tragedies can happen. The Save My Life Program provides free classes which help African-American women in Sarasota County to have the safest and healthiest pregnancies possible.
Classes are taught by Beverly Phelps, an African-American educator with over 22 years of experience as a family support worker. Beverly is a longtime resident of the Newtown Community and is recognized as the first African-American Childbirth Educator in Sarasota County.
Participants in the Save My Life Program are encouraged to make
healthier life choices in order to have the healthiest pregnancy
possible. Participants are given helpful incentives for class
participation, such as safe-sleep bassinets, cribs, car
seats, and other baby items.
